Wodonga Urban Landcare Network, Murray Landcare, and Parklands Albury Wodonga, along with regional Friends and Landcare groups are again teaming up to host the Great Southern BioBlitz (GSB) in Albury Wodonga!

The Great Southern BioBlitz (GSB) is an international event across the southern hemisphere to promote the surveying of the natural world in order to upload as many records of plants, animals, and fungi as possible to the citizen science platform iNaturalist. Different geographical areas have their own local summaries and these results will be available after the event. Last year 279 observations identified 181 species across Albury Wodonga!

This year the GSB observation period is Friday 20 September to Monday 23 September, 2024. Observations made during this time can be uploaded to iNaturalist until two weeks after the event.

So how can you get involved? You can choose to come along to some guided nature walks (listed below; please register) where help will be on hand to upload records, or you can just go out and enjoy nature and upload any photos you take, so long as they are taken within the BioBlitz observation period.

To upload records, you’ll need to have an iNaturalist account (it’s free). You can either download the app to your phone or you can use the website version on a computer if that’s easier (you’ll just need to get photos from your phone or camera on to your computer).

That’s it! Everything you add during the GSB period will automatically be included in the BioBlitz. If your observations are in Albury Wodonga, they’ll be included in our local summary.

But if you’d like, we also invite you to “join” this Albury Wodonga iNaturalist project to keep up to date on what’s happening and see the records as they flow in.

What will you find this September? Will you add observations of plants, animals (yes including insects, fish, birds, mammals, and all others), fungi or something else? We look forward to finding out via this project!
