When Project 66 launched this year, much of the work of developing concepts and establishing feasibility had already been done. Behind the scenes over the past two years, while many of us were isolated by the pandemic and closed borders, plans were progressed and permits sought to deliver the long-held vision of a public access recreational trail between Albury and Lake Hume.

Essential to the first 24km of the trail are three footbridges to span Murray river tributaries. These will connect Gateway Island with Browns Island, which is the island to the east of Gateway Island.

The installation of these three bridges will open up stretches of little known wetlands and river frontages to our community, bringing the vision of the full 66km Murray River Red Gum Trail that much closer.

Parklands are seeking local partners, both ‘doers’ and sponsors, to help make this aspiration a reality. Funds have been sought to construct these footbridges, and there is plenty of additional opportunity for local on-ground input, in-kind support and sponsorship of essential elements of the trail.
