This active Friends Group was established as a result of a public meeting in 2000 and has been instrumental in the realisation of the High Country Rail Trail.

The degraded and inaccessible disused railway corridor between the Kiewa River and Sandy Creek Inlet is now a popular multi-purpose recreational trail. Former railway platforms at Bonegilla Siding, Ebden and Huon Reserve have been restored and a significant volume of planting undertaken by a diversity of groups and volunteers to improve biodiversity and outcompete weeds.

In addition to the ongoing maintenance and management of this section of the rail trail, some of the significant achievements of this volunteer group include;

• Safety hand rails installed on four railway bridges
• Three new footbridges constructed across the Kiewa floodplain.
• Negotiations with the City of Wodonga and North East Water resulting in an off-road link from Wodonga’s CBD to connect with the rail trail at Killara.
• 600metre Sandy Creek bridge as a result of eight years of lobbying and negotiations.
• Two 300 metre long boardwalks constructed on the Kiewa River floodplain
• Quarterly Friends Events since 2006.

Monthly meetings are held on the first Monday of each month at 7.30pm at Bonegilla Community Hall, Murray Valley Hwy, Bonegilla. New members welcome.

Monthly working bees are generally the Saturday morning after the Monday meeting.
