This is the perfect trail if you’re looking for something a bit more scenic than the standard bike path, but still want something flat and close to home! Remember to watch out for snakes in warmer weather and as always, it is recommended you carry a snake bite kit with you wherever you’re walking in the reserves. Please also note that this trail is subject to flooding.
The Murray River Red Gum Trail consists of several sections of walking track along the Murray River which will eventually become a continuous trail covering 66 km from the Wagirra Trail to Lake Hume (you can read more about the Murray River Red Gum Trail and Project 66 here).
The section in the spotlight in this article is the trail that follows the Murray River on the Victorian side to where it is met by Wodonga Creek. The trail then continues along Wodonga Creek to the old stock bridge, after which you will need to use the bike path along the Lincon Causeway back to the starting point. The entire loop is around 8 km and there is a choice of two car parking areas which are outlined below.
You can park your car along Lemke Rd. (see the Google Map pin here) and begin walking along the Crossing Place Trail. When you reach Smugglers Corner (signed; see photo below), take a left over a boardwalk to the chicane gate at the entrance to the trail.
There is a map on this first gate then the trail sets off along the river, often quite close to the water which makes for scenic views.
There is plenty to look out for along the way, including wildlife such as kangaroos and wallabies as well as native birds. The trail is lined with majestic river red gums and there are several signs such as this one detailing some river history.
Boardwalks over the smaller creeks and waterways mean dry feet and there is always a new water view to admire.
You will come out near the old stock bridge (see the Google Map pin here) and then you can make your way back on the bike path along the Lincon Causeway. Or you could start here and do the trail in the other direction if you like.

We hope you can get out and enjoy this walk and appreciate the beauty of our local waterways!
