Parklands Albury Wodonga is excited to share that the Rotary Club of Albury has awarded a two-year grant for the 20 Day Challenge! This project is the brainchild of the Wodonga Rail Trail Advisory Group, who have been diligently maintaining the urban section of the High Country Rail Trail for more than six years. However, the past three wet summers have resulted in a significant spread of woody weeds such as ash along this section and it’s time for the community to step up and lend a hand!
The High Country Rail Trail is a popular asset that we are lucky enough to have in our backyard, with counters recording a massive 38,480 people using the urban section through Wodonga over the past year!
So here’s your chance to give back, both to the small groups of volunteers who look after these areas for your enjoyment, as well as to nature, which is increasingly under threat in these challenging times.
The involvement of workplaces and other groups in this 20 Day Challenge will increase a sense of connection to community and to nature through collectively tackling woody weeds and improving biodiversity along this popular environmental corridor. Habitat improvement in this area is vital as threatened squirrel gliders (Petaurus norfolcensis), which inhabit nest boxes fabricated by the Wodonga Men’s Shed along the corridor, rely on native plants for food and shelter.
If this sounds like something your group or workplace would like to be involved with, please reach out to us at info@parklands-alburywodonga.org.au. This is a great opportunity to make a difference in our local area!

The nitty-gritty:
This challenge will consist of 20 half-day working bees over this autumn and the coming spring. Groups will work with Parklands Rangers to cut and poison woody weeds and load them into trailers. How many trailer-loads will your group fill?!
