“Kev” the giant reptile is newly ensconced on the Gateway Island walking trail and gaining plenty of admirers.

This life-sized sculpture of a Megalania – a formidable reptilian hunter from the Pleistocene era – is the brainchild of Kevin Ennis of the Wodonga Men’s Shed. Kevin spent months fabricating the monolithic mega fauna out of steel and concrete.

Growing up to 7 metres long, Megalania used speed, massive jaws with serrated blade-like teeth and a venomous bite to hunt prey. Everything from birds eggs and chicks to giant marsupials were game for this predator, the largest land-dwelling lizard known. We are glad this Kev isn’t actually alive!

A big thank you to the steady crane operating hands of Brent O’Malley, from M & K Oates Transport, who ably transported and craned the 700kg sculpture into place.
