Water, water everywhere and the mozzies are having a field day! Ranger Dan recorded this hair raising video of mozzie action while out and about last week.
Mosquitoes are hatching out in swarms in the still water that is lying everywhere at the moment. They are not only extremely unpleasant, but also dangerous.
Regionally, we are at risk of Ross River virus, Barmah Forest virus, Murray Valley encephalitis and now Japanese Encephalitis has been added to the list of very nasty mosquito borne diseases.
There is no cure for any of these life-threatening diseases, and vaccination is only possible against Japanese Encephalitis.
The solution; stop them breeding if you can, and don’t get bitten! The advice is to eliminate any water pooling around your property, cover up – wear long sleeves and trousers of light coloured materials, and use repellent containing DEET, Picaridin, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (PMD), that have been approved by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA).
