As we’re all getting used to dodging potholes in the regional roads these days, we should all have our eye in for turtles as well.
Freshwater turtles are moving between waterways and dams at the moment in search of nesting places. If you see a turtle on the road, please do your best to avoid it – as you would for potholes!
Better still, if you can safely assist a turtle to cross (in the direction it is already going please!), you will be doing your bit for an Aussie native that is in serious trouble, mainly due to predation by foxes.
Tips on how to move a turtle can be found on the 1 million turtles website. Be aware that they can squirt a very foul smelling liquid as a defence mechanism!
