The Gateway Island mural project is closer to fruition this week with the first artwork sent to the printers. This is one of six works currently being produced by a team of local indigenous artists.

Mural painting day is one of camaraderie and quiet industry when three generations of artists work together on the project. Each are doing their own paintings, while sharing stories, ideas and artistic tips and techniques.

The art works themselves will be scaled and printed to mural size, then installed on the bridge structures along the Gateway Island walking trail.

This technique has enabled the painting activities to be situated away from the actual mural sites, with the work taking place wherever suited the young artists involved, their parents and grandparents. This circumvented issues with flooding on the island.

We look forward to launching the new murals over summer.
