A big thank you to Rotarians from Albury and North Albury Clubs for spending a few hours on Saturday morning 27 November helping to complete bridgework on the ‘Tree Top Trail’ on Gateway Island.
The task of installing chain mesh on the handrails brings the final bridge on this walking trail to a safe state for walkers to use. The chain mesh provides a safety barrier allowing confident use of the trail across Gateway Island, which utilises the old bridges decommissioned when the new freeway and rail link were built.
The ‘Oh, what a feeling’ photos didn’t quite work as planned, but the winding of tie wire through chainmesh onto the bridge handrails was completed in three hours, thanks to the dexterous skills and efforts of Rotarians Glen Nagel, Peter Ellias, Rodney Seth, Liz Pascoe, Jozette Dellemain and Winston Romey.
This activity is one part of seven park infrastructure projects made possible through a Bushfire Recovery Victoria grant, and we thank BRV for the opportunities this funding provided to build community connections and improve the amenity of our regional parklands.
Our ‘Connecting Seniors through delivery of Wodonga park infrastructure’ project has certainly created opportunities for volunteering as well as leaving a legacy in the infrastructure of Wodonga Regional Parks.
To date, eight local businesses have benefitted, two new casuals were employed and 82 volunteers participated in delivering this project. As well, a team of around 30 Wodonga Mens’ Shed members fabricated the hundreds of bridge stanchions that form the new handrails on the four railway bridges on the ‘Tree Top Trail’. Our thanks to all.
