Local residents have recently taken up stewardship of the inner urban sections of the Rail Trail in Wodonga, with improvements evident already.
Parklands Ranger Danny Jones has led several activities to get the new stewardship group started, including a walk along the trail assessing future works and discussing opportunities for volunteer involvement. Mowing, removing accumulated rubbish and old railway related debris, treating weeds, landscaping and planting wildlife attracting native plants were all topics of interest.
The initial walk was followed by a morning preparing and planting tussocky native grasses and shrubs beside the newly surfaced rail trail. These were all planted into weed mat to prevent non-native weeds overpowering the new plants and get them off to a good start. The chilly morning finished nicely with a hot cuppa and chat after planting.
Thanks to Bonegilla Rail Trail group members, Parklands Stewardship program volunteers and Wodonga Urban Landcare Network for supporting the efforts of this new group.
