White settlement began in the Border District in 1835, and the small Bowna Station was formed between Table Top and Cumberoona stations. Bowna village grew on the Mullegandra creek where it joined the Twelve Mile creek.

The entire village was drowned by the rising waters of the Hume Weir in 1934.
