Wodonga’s Huon Hill lookout set a suitably impressive scene for the graduation ceremony of the Green Army ‘Team of Awsome’ today.

The team were accompanied by proud family members and applauded by the local organisations and community groups who have benefitted from their work.

Mark Paganini of Conservation Volunteers presented all 8 participants with their graduation certificates, and team supervisor Kim Radnell spoke of the wide range of experiences they had had over the past six months.

Based at Parklands, the GA team would daily leave in the trusty ‘Troopie’ pulling a trailer load of gear, headed for the job of the day.

Over six months they have worked on the Killara Rail Trail, the Kiewa River track, Huon, Hunchback and Bears hills, Clyde Cameron, Stringybark and Drapers reserves, Willow and David Winterbottom Parks, Felltimber Creek, Winton and Wonga wetlands, the Hume and Hovell Track, Bullioh, Koetong, the Baranduda Link, the Bhutanese Market Garden and the National Environment Centre!

They have experienced a diverse range of activities including planting, mulching and watering, woody weeding and hand weeding, track building and concreting. They have repaired and restored park tables, surveyed nest boxes, trimmed overhead branches on walking tracks, framed and netted the community garden, installed bollards, installed static lines for the safety of volunteers working on a trestle bridge and assisted with erosion management on waterways. Above all, they have become a fantastic team; the Team of Awesome!

The Wodonga Urban Landcare Network joined Parklands in thanking the team for their hard work, their youthful strength and enthusiasm, their dedication to working in the environmental field and the morale boost they bring to community groups working in Wodonga’s parks. We wish them all the best and hope they find rewarding work in the field.
