John has been a volunteer with Parklands since 2011. He was attracted to Parklands by the promise of outdoor work and variety, having worked previously in a factory. He joined as an early retiree and volunteers for 30 hours per week with the team.
John brings a good work ethic and great people skills. His reliability, persistence and quiet manner have earned him a place as 'right hand man' on the team, especially when inexperienced volunteers are learning the ropes. He enjoys working with different people and has seen changes in staff and a constant flow of young volunteers. He enjoys the variety of experiences on the job and has leaned a great deal.
Training opportunities such as 'Working at Heights' and other courses also extend his experiences, and have allowed John to take up some casual work with Parklands as well. He has been involved with the Orchid project at Urana, clearing seedling Callitris to allow space and light for the rare Diuris oaklands orchids to flourish, and with the many Fun Runs Parklands organises on the bush trails around Albury-Wodonga.
One of the most memorable experiences John has had with Parklands is the restoration of the Trestle Bridges. He has found great satisfaction in renewing the old bridges and creating something that will last; that in the future he will be able to see and know he had a hand in creating.
